creative consumerism?

many of us get into advertising because of this perception of it as a "creative industry," a hedging of bets between selling out to the man and fulfilling creative and artistic urges.  unfortunately, the "industry" typically overwhelms the "creative," resulting in an overabundance of crap littering our visual landscapes and folks like myself leaving the industry after a few years in it.

debate as you will the role advertising plays in our post-modern consumerist society, but love it or hate it, it is an unavoidable fact of life.  one strike against the advertising machine is that most of it is boring and crappy and so out-of-touch with how to truly provide value to us.  big companies rarely want to break from the mold and rock the boat, and the small ones that do can't afford to get noticed.  marketing managers are content to play it safe and preserve the status quo, rather than take chances that may or may not pan out for their ascension of the corporate ladder.

but sometimes we are reminded of this concept of advertising as creative… and it makes all the difference.

    Hi…

I was doing some routine stat checking concerning our website www.buyoutsidethebox.com when I came across your use of the term “Creative Consumerismā„¢.”

This is actually a term we have trademarked. I’m not sure who the author of the article was, but it was a BRW article published on Jan. 12, 2007. We would appreciate you mentioning our company when you use this term again in the future.

We invite you to take a look at our website buyoutsidethebox.com. We are in the business of selling art and fine, handmade items to a global marketplace.

Thanks for your respect of our trademark.

    Sincerely,

    Ruth Mitchell
