back to the regular scheduled program?
gosh. when life gets busy, the first thing to go is the blog. life is still busy, but let's try and get things back on track.
saw dengue fever last night at the independent. i'm putting on an event at the venue for the asian american film festival so saw this as a good opportunity to take advantage of my guest list privileges before i lose 'em. as always, they put on a great show. no one else combines surf rock, psychedelic garage, cambodian pop, and khmer lyrics quite like them!
straight outta la (and long beach), female lead singer chhom nimol and company have put out two great albums and developed a reputation as a rockin' live band. last night was no exception and it was a nice surprise to see chhom sing a couple new songs in english. a natural and welcome evolution of this unique band. while dengue fever's sound may seem out of left field, there's strong historical roots in their sound. with the american armed forces importing '60s american radio (propaganda) into vietnam and cambodia a la voice of america, a unique fusion of traditional khmer folk and pop with '60s style rock developed.
give 'em a listen on their myspace as well as in their video for sni bong below…
