those crazy japanese girls
described as the "olsen twins if they were japanese and on acid," kiiiiiii is closing up the night i'm organizing at the rickshaw stop march 21. they really have to be seen to be fully appreciated. two crazy and cute japanese girls, one a drummer/percussionist, one an mc, belt out rock and roll-electro-punk-hip hop songs that include covers of "we are the world" and the wiggles. i'd describe them as part art rock, part performance art, part punk rock. they're being talked up in the blogosphere in anticipation of this first u.s. tour that starts in austin at sxsw.
it's interesting, i've seen some articles that talk about kiiiiiii's role within japanese pop culture. they certainly embody the "kawaii" (the concept of japanese cuteness seen throughout their culture), but they certainly don't act like it. their punk rock, anti-establishment behavior belies their image, and in a follow-the-leader society like japan, this can be revolutionary. who knows. all i do know is that they're not quite like anything i've seen before.
some things are better listened to at home on your fancy stereo. kiiiiiiii is not one of those.
march 21 in san francisco at the rickshaw stop. here's a little preview, their video for "4 little joeys."

Wish I was in the city for this date at the Rickshaw…
