check out alembic in the upper haight.  this small cocktail bar/small plates eatery served up one of the most surprisingly delicious dinners i've had in quite some time.  plus, they've got a huge cocktail and liquor menu.  avoid it on the weekends, as the place is tiny and service can be stretched a bit too thin.  but the french bistro-ish food is wonderful and affordable, and the drinks menu is long.  and heavy (you'll see).

• spaetzle "gratinee" with braised rabbit, niman bacon, portobello mushrooms
• grilled baby squid
