while i have 1,759 songs on my computer…

…i have no journey.
i dj'd last night at mr. smith's, a soma bar/club on 7th between market and mission, for my friend sunny's birthday. in itself not a bad place (perhaps a bit "marina" but wasn't too bad last night), with three levels and a good size dancefloor in the basement. keeping in mind the nature of the venue and in trying to head off too many "can you play hip hop" requests, i decided to go with an eclectic genre-spanning "mainstream" mix that would allow me to maintain some of my dignity. anyways, the set went off really well, after resolving some mixer-serato conflicts (amusing sidenote: probably the most stressful time of my dj set is when i'm trying to set up serato before i play). my setlist for the evening:
- bhangra remix - dj earflaps
- got your money - ol' dirty bastard
- ich und elaine (2raum club mix) - 2 raumwohnung
- my love (dfa mix) - justin timberlake
- marble house (rex the dog remix) - the knife
- bundalele baile jean - edu k
- white horse (mike monday remix) - wonderland avenue
- stoopit (original mix) - the martin brothers
- when i come back around (freeform five remix) - jamie lidell
- push it - salt 'n pepa
- d.a.n.c.e. (mstrkrft remix) - justice
- disco infiltrator - lcd soundsystem
- cars - gary numan
- something 2 dance 2 - nwa
- ice cream (the hooks remix) - new young pony club
- nchlinez (dj froz mad edit) - crookers
- erotic city - prince
- stop me (original) - mark ronson
- pleasure from the bass - tiga
i've gotta say, the song that has killed it both at tasty and last night is the mstrkrft justice remix. an amazing remix that i think has much more staying power than the original.
and as to the journey reference above, well, despite my best intents to cater to a variety of tastes (or lack thereof), one drunk ass beeyatch comes up in front of the booth. i typically try not to make eye contact, kind of like when you're walking down a sf street trying to avoid catching the panhandlers' eye. but the really drunk ones don't let that tactic stop them. so she gets up in my face and says, "hey! can you play some journey? it's my friend's birthday." ha. i reply, "sorry, didn't bring my journey greatest hits out tonight." she says "you guys suck!", spins and walks away. i suspect throwing on some journey would have killed it also, although not in the same way as the d.a.n.c.e. remix.
